New York Is A Better Place!

I'm a little late in posting this, but New York finally passed gay marriage into law! It's the sixth state to do so, and the most populated state to pass it by far. It makes me happy to see another state finally recognize that marriage is a basic right for all people.

Ignore the image (ATHF was an awesome movie, though) and listen to the lyrics. When these things happen, even though it's on the other side of the country, I always feel like partying. I even did a little victory dance when I heard the news. Congratulations New York! You have made your state a better place to live, and you have made the government of this country seem slightly less bigoted!

  1. I couldn't agree with you more. Marriage is a basic civil right and denying it to a select group of people based upon something as inconsequential as their sexual preference or skin color is offensive, unjust and ludicrous. In today's supposedly enlightened age it's really pathetic that 44 states have yet to ratify a similar law making marriage equality the law of the land. But until we can finally shut up the redneck, bible-thumping, bigoted hypocrites that control things, it's going to be an uphill battle. Great job!

  2. I think it's a huge travesty that the entire union hasn't accepted gay marriage. We even have states passing bills that state marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman. Because, you know, definitions of words always stay the same. We are supposed to be the land of the free, a beacon to the other countries of the world, and here we are. We are attempting to actively strip citizens of their rights. I'm more than incredibly happy that New York passed the bill, and more than disgusted that 44 other states haven't.

  4. I am so happy that New York passed this! I can imagine that, because New York is the cool kid of the class, other states might start realizing how bigoted they are actually being. Of course, Utah will be the last.
Personally, though, I think the government is using the warring sides and debate to distract the public from other issues that the country should be more focused on in the same way that they use illegal immigrants. I think more states, and the union, would have passed it sooner if it wasn't so easy a carrot to lead John Q. public around with by playing one side against the other. It's a sad state of affairs when basic human rights get tossed aside to further someone's political career.

  5. It truly is sad.

I just read that the Catholic Church is moving to uninvite politicians to church events (Private school events for their kids, etc.) because this law passed. They then say, ironically, that the state has no business legislating affection. Do they not see the bullshit?

  7. Unfortunately, power like some of these churches have breeds hypocrisy.

  8. This is excellent news. LGBT people are one step closer to full equality, at least in New York.

  9. It's just sad that they have to take these baby steps. But it is a good thing it's happening!
