We Bleeding Hearts

Liberals. We all know the stereotypes. To the Right Wingers, and even Moderates, we are seen as pansies, wusses, politically correct hippies, and other such things. They seem to have a point. There are plenty of us who worry about offending people. Who worry about being overly 'politically correct'. So why would anyone be a Liberal? Who wants to be 'weak'?

That's easy. I'm a Liberal, and I'm a Liberal because I have empathy. Empathy is not a weakness. Being able to see how people in other situations feel is a strength. Being able to relate to your fellow human beings who aren't like you is a strength. Wanting the same rights for all human beings, regardless of race, creed, orientation, gender, ability, class, etc., is not weak. There is nothing wrong with asking people to stop saying hate words. Racial slurs don't help keep us united. Racial slurs keep us divided into cliques. They make it 'us' and 'them'. Asking others to be tolerant does not make us pansies. It makes us the bigger people. How is asking people to not say those things, or to treat everyone as humans and equals, weakness?

The Right Wing calls us weak and wusses so they can try to justify their bigotry. They say we are all too worried about being politically correct so they can keep saying what they want. By declaring Liberals weak, they make it so they can denigrate anyone who isn't like them. It's the tactic of bullies. Make your opposition look weak, and anything they say seem like it's sissy, and the public will think you are strong. You can then get away with saying any horrible thing you want. Hell, we have the Tea Party going on about how they are racists, and proud! How can they get away with it? Because they make us out to be weak. We say all people deserve respect, they say that only wimps think that, and this is 'Merica! (They use a double whammy of bullying and patriotism.) It's sickening.

Liberals need to show we are not the weaklings they think we are. We aren't weak, and we never were. We have to show them that caring for everyone, even those not just like us, is the right thing to do. We need to spread the message that equal rights is just that, equal rights, and all people deserve them. We bleeding hearts need to show that empathy is not our weakness, it's what makes us strong.

  4. I LOVE Liberals and am PROUD to be one! We aren't weak but we are too nice for our own good. As for our dear president, he is the smartest man in Washington and the country will soon come to realize that. The teabaggers are going down and taking the whole thug party down with them. This of course will just bring out more hate because with fear comes hate and we all know the Righties FEAR everything!

  5. Awesome post. I had never really thought of liberalism as being empathy but it is true.

  8. That's how I have always seen it. I genuinely care for other human beings, and that has always affected how I see politics. If it doesn't benefit everyone, why do it?

Thanks for taking the time to check out our blog! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  9. I agree. We are too nice sometimes (Not me though, I don't care about being PC or if I offend. Ask Virgil, I can be a huge dick) We need to start showing the country that caring is not weakness. I hope the Tea party goes down in flames, but I fear like all forms of stupidity that they will remain in one form or another.

Thank you for taking the time to read!

  10. Thank you good sir. At least Obama has mustered up some balls and pretty much told the public that if we default on the debt problem, it's because the Republicans won't deal.

  12. Love the post. Found you guys from Sue's fantastic blog.

I'm proud to be a liberal as well. I was visiting a conservative's blog the other day and read a commenter who claimed that the Founding Fathers' principles were conservative. I corrected her and pointed out that rebellion against a government is by any measure radical AND liberal, and that the FFs employed liberal ideas when they broke with Britain. It was the CONSERVATIVE colonists who wanted to stay with Britain, and who eventually high tailed it to Canada when the colonists/rebels/liberals won the revolution.

Most of those who follow the Tea Bagger/GOP do NOT know history and get their facts from FAUX NOOZ, Sarah Palin, or Michele Bachmann. IOWs they're mostly ill informed dunces.

I'm blog rolling this site. I'll be back again.

  13. It's sad that they don't know their own history. I'm not the most knowledgeable with history, but I know a lot more than the Tea Partiers seem too. (Guess I paid more attention in School?)

I find it frightening how willing they are to rewrite history as well. When Sarah Palin made her big mistake with Paul Revere and everyon corrected her, all her followers were willing to try to change history to fit her account. She even tried to explain that she was completely correct. It's very frightening.

Thanks for taking the time to read! We are always happy to hear people enjoyed coming to our blog!

  14. Well said. I too fail to see how empathy and a belief in justice make anyone "weak".
